Our Story

The Story Behind the Smoke

At Rub and Dab, Barbecue is artisanal and a craft, fusing childhood Zimbabwean party favourites with world barbecue and fire cooking techniques. From African, American,  Caribbean, European and Asian direct and indirect fire cooking techniques. From 7 hour smoked Beef short ribs with our in house black pepper and sea salt based rub to slowly smoked bombastic Ox cheeks to baby back or belly Pork ribs dabbed with a Smoky, Sweet and tangy barbecue sauce, Not forgetting the Mozambican Peri peri chicken marinated in a Birds Eye chilli, Garlic, Olive oil and Lemon based marinade and sauce. Last but not least the homemade ZimRussian smoked sausage and Boerewors    (Zim&South African Farmers’ sausage). Complemented by Gogo’s (Big Mama’s) slow cooked baked beans to our creamy, fresh and tangy magic (coleslaw) Slaw, Grilled or steamed butternuts. Plain or Spicy steamed rice or Sadza (Maize meal hardened porridge).

Our Influences

Rooted in African Warmth & Colour

Our flavours and our visuals take inspiration from African food culture – generous portions, vibrant colours and food cooked over open flames.
The geometric patterns and bold colour blocks you’ll see across our branding are inspired by Ndebele art, known for its strong lines and rich symbolism.
Just like those patterns, our barbeque is all about identity, community and creativity.
